Program Benefits

Harvard Business Publishing (HBP)

All students will receive a Harvard Business Publishing account after Add/Drop during your first term. You will receive an email to your program email inbox to access your account and review the “How to Discuss a Case” excerpt by William Ellet.

You will need to download all the single-click readings in your classes each week. These downloads will be inaccessible on New Year’s Day of each year. If you do not download them each week of class, you will not be able to access them in the future.

This step also impacts your ability to view future readings throughout the program. Please be sure to do so, and note your new password if you decide to create a new one, as this will be used for other materials

Career Services

Overview

Harvard Business Analytics Program students have access to a suite of career support services at two general levels: resource level services and developmental level services.

  • Resource-level services include support in compiling the essential resources for career development and job applications: resumes, cover letters, LinkedIn profiles, etc.
  • Developmental-level services center around career coaching and can tackle projects such as career goal development, career advancement, networking advice, or any topic on which you need career advising.

Services include informational webinars, instructional resources, and personalized coaching opportunities. Upcoming webinars can be found in the HBAP calendar and will be announced via Slack. Recordings of webinars and materials can be found in the HBAP Virtual Career Center (VCC) located in the Digital Campus.

Additionally, the Career Engagement Network is a one-stop-shop for career support. The network provides you with the resources and training you need to upskill or re-skill for your career.

Getting Help

You can reach the Career Success team via email at careerservices@analytics.hbs.edu to schedule a one-on-one intake appointment (15–20 minutes).

For your first appointment, you can expect to discuss your professional background, career goals, interests, and relevant skills. Action items and additional 45-minute follow-up appointments may be scheduled in line with your career coaching needs.

Making plans for the future takes time so getting started early can help you achieve your goals in a timely manner.

FAQ

Q: When should I contact Career Success?
A: We recommend that you contact Career Success as soon as possible upon entering the program, even if you are not currently looking for a job. That way, you can have an Intake appointment and learn about the available career support and explore potential career opportunities as you work your way through the program. For students that chose a graduate degree in order to get new jobs or pivot careers, the job search process may take some time, so it is best to start the process early. The coach can also help the student with existing work challenges related to their professional brand, leadership capabilities, or organizational change.

Q: How can I get my materials reviewed by a Career Success coach?
A: You can contact careerservices@analytics.hbs.edu to get any of your career materials reviewed. You should specify the materials that you want reviewed and attach them. Resumes and Cover letters should be sent in MS Word format, and it is highly recommended that you send your resumes using the recommended templates in the VCC. LinkedIn profiles can be downloaded as PDFs and emailed. You can also request career, leadership, or business coaching at the same time that you request a career material review. It generally takes about 5-7 business days to complete career material reviews.

Q: Is there sample text for describing the program on LinkedIn and during networking conversations?
A: Consider using this stock text about the program:

Q: What career resources are available to support my search for a new job opportunity?
A: The Career Success team offers individual career coaching to help you explore a range of job options while mutually developing a customized action plan. Our team can help you evaluate career decisions and job opportunities based on your professional goals.

HBAP Forum

The HBAP Forum program was launched as a way to support the community’s desire for lifelong learning. The Forum program features AI & analytics content beyond the core HBAP curriculum in a variety of formats:

  • Forum Webinars – These one-hour webinar-style events feature industry experts (including program faculty and student graduates). Upcoming Forum webinars can be found in the HBAP calendar and will be announced via Slack.
  • Beta Cases – These 90-minute case discussions are an opportunity for: a) HBS faculty to try out new cases before using them in the MBA classroom; and b) HBAP students to get exposure to new cases and HBS faculty.

The HBAP Forum program provides frequent opportunities for past and present HBAP participants to expand their learning. To be kept up to date on all HBAP Forum offerings, including short courses, beta cases, and webinars, be sure to join the HBAP Forum Slack channel.

Lifelong Learning

Entrepreneurship and HBAP — HBAP offers entrepreneurship programming annually to HBAP participants. The program has collaborated with startup founders and CEOs like Doug Levin (Black Duck) and Rana el Kaliouby (Affectiva, now SmartEye) who have brought their wealth of knowledge and networks to the HBAP classroom. HBAP has also organized startup and pitch lectures and workshops led by AI and data analytics experts like Marily Nika and Lauren Moores. Programming like this culminates, every year, in the annual HBAP Pitch Competition, which allows all HBAPers, past and present, to submit a pitch deck and compete to present their pitches at the competition finals, a live event before a panel of expert judges. HBAP programming around entrepreneurship varies year by year, but the program is committed to offering the HBAP community the tools they need to succeed in their own ventures, no matter what stage they are at.

All HBAP students and graduates are eligible to participate in one or both programs, which give you the tools to turn promising concepts into market-ready businesses.

Student-led Clubs and Events

The HBAP community is an important aspect of the student experience and provides a vibrant array of opportunities outside of the classroom for students to network, learn from each other, and share their experiences. There are a variety of student clubs, interest groups, and student organized events, check out the Slack channels to learn more.

Students can add the Community Calendar to their Google Suite to find out about and join upcoming student-led events and ongoing club meetings. The calendar is domain protected and can only be accessed via an HBAP Google account. To add the calendar, make sure to log out of any personal or work Google accounts, click the calendar link, and enter your HBAP credentials.

If students would like to hold their own event and have it added to the calendar, they should be in contact with their Cohort Representatives. Student-led events should be promoted via Slack and in the Community Calendar. All student-led events, clubs, and initiatives should clearly designate that they are student-led and organized and not program-led or sponsored by the program. Please add the following language to all student-led communications. Messaging should include: The [name of the event] is organized and hosted by Harvard Business Analytics Program (HBAP) current and past students. The [name of the event] is not endorsed by Harvard or its affiliates, nor is the [name of the event] sponsored by the Harvard Business Analytics Program.

Access to CAI Course Materials for Graduates

In the July 2022 term, the Harvard Business Analytics program redesigned the Digital Strategy & Innovation Course and created the new Competing in the Age of AI Course. Students who previously completed the DSI course, but did not have access to the CAI course, are now able to request access to the CAI course materials. This access is completely asynchronous and will not have any live session support nor faculty support, and will remain open through 1/1/24.

Similarly, for those who graduated on or before December 2021, we have transitioned from 2HU to the Digital Campus. Thus, you will be provisioned with access to a new LMS in order to view the CAI course materials. Request access to competing in the age of AI course materials.
